New to Yoga?
We’ll answer some common questions.
What if I’m not flexible?
Our studio is a gentle yoga studio, so we encourage you to start where you are. If you’ve never done yoga or it’s been a really long time, life happens to our bodies. We want you to be on your mat, even if you just sit and breathe. Our teachers can help you modify yoga poses to fit what your body can do.
What do I wear?
Comfy clothes that you can stand, sit or lie down in. We do remove our shoes for yoga, so you’re welcome to be barefoot or wear socks.
What should I bring?
We have all of the props you need in the studio. If you have your own mat, great, but in case you don’t, we have plenty of loaners! Other than that, we have a water cooler available to refill your bottle!
What if I’m overweight or not confident?
We want you to feel comfortable to be your full self at Sacred Steps. We have yogis of all sizes. We promise, during classes, everyone is focused on themselves, so you don’t need to be self-conscious!
What are all these “yoga words”?
The practice of yoga originates with the Sanskrit language, so you may hear your teacher use Sanskrit words on occasion. Feel free to ask what they mean!
There are also some words you hear thrown around that are unfamiliar:
-Props: This simply refers to some of the items we use to make the practice more comfortable. Common props at Sacred Steps are blocks (foam bricks); Bolsters (sturdy pillows); Straps (nylon bands); Blankets; Rice Bags & Golf Balls
-Savasana: Savasana is a Sanskrit word meaning “corpse pose.” It is the final resting period at the end of yoga class. It’s one of the most important parts of a class— your time to rest & breathe after a class.
-Asana/Posture/Pose: These are the shapes that we bring our bodies to during a yoga class.
-Namaste: Many yoga teachers will close their classes with saying “Namaste” This term represents honoring the light inside each student.
